When the lights are turned out

and the doors are all locked

I am alone.

My hand reaches out in the darkness.

I fumble and I feel within the dirt an object.

It is an old broken cross.

My bones are old and my back is bent

but I manage to strap the remains 

of the cross to my back.

I stand straight for the first time in years.
